Happy Hump Day! I’m Tawny, an advice columnist better known as “The Sober Sexpert” and author of Dry Humping: A Guide to Dating, Relating, and Hooking Up Without the Booze. I’m here to empower you to find your *intrinsic* courage without booze—regardless of your relationship status—one date at a time.
Today’s column is a little bit different. I got a question about why you should buy my book—and Beyond Liquid Courage’s Managing Editor Irina Gonzalez answered it. She’s a career journalist and editor with over 18 years of experience, so she knows her stuff. Read on for an inside look at each chapter of Dry Humping.
If you’ve already preordered a copy or three, THANK YOU SO MUCH. And don’t forget to click here to get your Dry Humping Starting Guide!
Dear Tawny,
I love your content and have been following you for years. The free resources you provide are great—and I’m loving Beyond Liquid Courage! So… with everything that’s available online, I’m wondering: Why should I buy your book?
- Book Shy
Hi Book Shy friend! First of all, I just want to say: This is a great question and one that I’m sure others have! In fact, I think about this all of the time, too. Besides Tawny’s Dry Humping: A Guide to Dating, Relating, and Hooking Up Without the Booze, there are always excellent books coming out from authors and influencers whose work I already follow.
So, like… why pay for something you can kinda get for free? Let’s explore the many reasons!
Buy This Book If…
1. You’re scared about “putting yourself out there”
Can you truly love someone else if you don’t love yourself? A lot of changes happen mentally and physically if you quit or cut back on alcohol. So Chapter 1 of Dry Humping is all about dating yourself.
2. You aren’t sure how to find a booze-free partner
Our alcohol-obsessed culture doesn’t make this easy. Lucky for you, Chapter 2 of Dry Humping is all about how to get out there. We all need a little hand-holding here, and Tawny provides the warm guidance you crave.
3. You’re sick and tired of “Let’s get a drink!” dates
I can’t tell you how many times I tried not to roll my eyes or awkwardly explain that I don’t drink, so meeting at a wine bar isn’t ideal. In Chapter 3, Tawny walks us through how the eff to date outside the bar.
4. You rely on liquid courage to open up emotionally
Who hasn’t been at a place where you want to tell someone you care about something that scares you… and you relied on a shot of tequila to encourage yourself? Well, Chapter 4 helps you do this without 2-for-1 margaritas.
5. You’re sober/curious, but your partner isn’t
When I first met my now-husband, he was a drinker. And that’s not an easy road to navigate, whether you’re swiping on dating apps or already in a relationship. Say hellooooooo to Chapter 5 of Dry Humping.
6. You want to know what alcohol does to our sex lives
Tawny wrote about this in a previous column, but we all know that there’s so much more to this. That’s what Chapter 6 is for! Even if you drink, don’t you want to know what that’s doing to your, ahem, privates?
7. You want alternatives to booze to “loosen up” in the bedroom
All I really want to say here is: alcohol-free aphrodisiacs! *mind blown* I’ll be highlighting most of Chapter 7 in Dry Humping.
8. You want to get your sexy on… without liquid courage
You might already know a few of the basics of having sober sex, but Dry Humping isn’t easy even if you’re experienced. Chapter 8 delves into how to feel like your best sexual self without relying on a drink or two.
9. You’re processing deep shit but still want to have fun
We can’t really talk about sobriety, sober curiosity, or sex without talking about trauma and PTSD. Tawny masterfully handles these topics with care and compassion in Chapter 9 of Dry Humping.
10. You’re ready for or already in a relationship but still need help
Whether you’re newly coupled up or in a long-term relationship, Chapter 10 of Dry Humping is all about how to be together without alcohol getting in the way.
11. You want to learn to communicate better without alcohol’s push
Do you remember the last screaming match you had with someone, then waking up the next day, miserably hungover and regretting what you said? It can’t be just me… Well, learning to communicate and fight in a healthy way is crucial to short- and long-term love. Thank you, Chapter 11!
12. You don’t want to rely on alcohol for life’s tough moments
One of my most embarrassing stories pre-sobriety is when I stayed home all day, drinking and sobbing over a shitty breakup, and my roommate had to tell me to keep it down because she was on a work conference call. Yikes! Thankfully, Chapter 12 of Dry Humping helps to change that.
13. You want to live a mindful and courageous love life
Look, here’s the truth: I’m a married lady with a husband and kiddo, living in the suburbs and enjoying my 8-years-and-counting sobriety. So I’ll admit that like half of Dry Humping isn’t for me. (I mean, my partner might be a bit upset if I got on a dating app…) But I’ve already pre-ordered my copy of Dry Humping: A Guide to Dating, Relating, and Hooking Up Without the Booze! And that’s because I have been working with Tawny as an editor/writer/friend since 2019, and she knows what she’s talking about. Plus, I learn something new every day!
As someone who has written for over 50 national magazines and media sites, had more than 50 personal essays published in big outlets, and have edited thousands upon thousands of articles, you can trust me on this. Tawny’s THE Sober Sexpert, after all. And that title is well-deserved.
Don’t Buy This Book If…
You stumbled on this newsletter by accident and have absolutely no interest in learning how to navigate dating, relationships, and s-e-x from an alcohol-free perspective. Then again… if you’re here, aren’t you at least a little sober curious? So, nvm, you should get Dry Humping: A Guide to Dating, Relating, and Hooking Up Without the Booze too!
Happy reading,
Irina
